Finding the right wedding photographer for your special day is no easy task, we've certainly heard plenty of horror stories! From rude attitudes to horrendous photos, unfortunately some wedding photographers can have a negative impact on your wedding day. So how do you go about finding the right wedding photographer?
If Cambridgeshire is anything to go by, a quick ‘Cambridge wedding photographer’ Google search will bring up pages and pages of photographer websites. Unfortunately, just because they are on the first page does not mean they are the best, take your time looking through multiple portfolios, find the styles you like and then make sure you ask the right questions. Not only is the information you learn important, but asking these questions will give you an opportunity to gauge the photographers attitude and whether it’s a good match for your wedding.
Questions you should ask potential wedding photographers
- What contingency plans do you have in place if you are unwell or have a family emergency on our wedding day?
The reality is, wedding photographers are human and can be stuck down will illness or face a family emergency. Therefore, it’s imperative that they have a backup plan, otherwise you could be left with Uncle Bob taking your wedding photos!
Luckily at LightSide, we’ve got multiple backup plans. First and foremost, we have never missed a wedding day, secondly, there are two of us so if one of us were to be bed ridden the other is more than capable to be there for your wedding, and lastly, we know and trust another wedding photographer who we could call upon.
- Do you have professional indemnity and public liability insurance?
Wedding photographers carry a lot of gear with them on your wedding day and this makes them a potential hazard. If a guest trips over a camera bag and hurts themselves or the photographer steps back and in doing so knocks a priceless vase off a table, you are potentially going to make a legal claim against them to cover the cost of damages. This is what public liability insurance covers the photographer for, meaning you will get exactly what you are entitled to.
Accidents are not the only case where you may need to make a legal claim against your photographer, you may believe the photos are substandard or the photographer somehow lost a memory card with photos from your wedding day on it. In these cases, professional indemnity insurance will cover the photographer and if a valid claim is made, will pay out the damages to you.
Thankfully at LightSide we have never needed to use our insurance, but we do have both. We take a lot of pride and care in everything we do and we make every effort to ensure the safety of those around us and your photos.
- Does your price include digital copies of all the photos from the day?
Some wedding photographers charge extra for you to have all the photos they have edited from your wedding day. Make sure you are fully informed as to what you get for your money.
We pride ourselves on being completely transparent with pricing and every photo that we process from your wedding day will be given to you either via download or USB.
- How many photos can we expect you to deliver?
So, you finally get the message from your photographer that your wedding photos are ready! You excitedly sit down together to watch the slide show and begin to reminisce about all those magical moments only to get to the end and think ‘is that it?’.
Making sure yours and your photographers expectations match up before your wedding day is key. Some wedding photographers aim to deliver 800-1200 photos, while others aim for 200-300, but might spend hours expertly editing each photo. It’s important to remember that quantity does not equal quality, but getting an idea of how many photos your photographer expects to send you will ensure that you’re not disappointed with the amount your receive them.
We will always give you a guide to how many photos we expect to take on your wedding day, this will of course vary depending on the length of time you book us for.
Please do not let this guide scare you about the potential problems you could have with wedding photographers, the important thing is that you can now make an informed decision by asking the right questions.
Of course, if you are happy with LightSide Photography’s answers to all these questions, why not get in contact with us today to discuss your wedding photography!
